Our fathers, the bishops of the Oriental Orthodox Churches here on the East Coast of the United States write, “We are very eager for our Oriental Orthodox youth to come together to meet, pray, learn from one another and to enjoy Christian fellowship. We are calling on the parish priests and youth leaders of our sister churches to make every effort to organize opportunities to bring our Oriental Orthodox young people together.”

In keeping with this directive, St. Anthony Coptic Orthodox Church, 267 Hartford Road, Medford, NJ (http://www.saintanthonynj.org/Home.html) will be hosting an all-day conference of dialogue, fellowship, and prayer for the high school, college, and college graduate-aged youth from the Eritrean, Armenian, Ethiopian, Coptic, Syrian and Malankara (Indian) Orthodox Churches of the Greater Philadelphia area on Saturday, January 28, 2012.

“One Body and one Spirit” A Conference for Oriental Orthodox Youth: November 26, 2011

College-aged youth from the Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, Syrian and Malankara Syrian Orthodox Churches will gather on November 26 for an all-day conference of fellowship and discussion. The conference will take place at St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, 433 Riva Avenue, East Brunswick, NJ.

The day will focus on the words of St. Paul to the Ephesians: “There is one body and one spirit, just as your were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all and in all.” [Ephesians 4:4-6].

The Oriental Orthodox Churches are a family of five ancient, eastern churches that are fully united in their Christian faith and doctrine. “While autonomous churches with their own rich histories and Christian cultures, the Oriental Orthodox Churches are in full sacramental communion,” said V. Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan, Dean of St. Nersess Armenian Seminary (New York) and Secretary of the Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches. “We are truly brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ,” he added.

The daylong conference is open to high-school, college and graduate-aged students who are members of one of the Oriental Orthodox Churches. The cost is $10. Those interested are asked to register on-line at www.copticbiblestudy.org. For more information go to facebook.com/orthodoxsn.

Autumn 2010 Meeting: Discuss Reaching Out to Youth & Unveil New Website

October 2010 SCOOCH Group

Participants in the Autumn 2010 meeting of the Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary, New Rochelle, NY

The Autumn 2010 meeting of the Standing Conference of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in America was held at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary in New Rochelle, New York on Thursday, October 7, 2010. The objectives were to discuss reaching out to the Oriental Orthodox Youth and to Unveil the New Website!

Those present discussed a range of topics in a prayerful and loving atmosphere. Particular attention was given to our common challenge to reach the young people of our churches with the Good News of Jesus Christ, according to the ancient witness of the Oriental Orthodox Churches. Conference members discussed how to build our young people’s commitment to the Orthodox Christian faith and graft them more permanently and meaningfully into the life of the Oriental Orthodox Churches today. Sayidna Mor Cyril (S) proposed organizing a day-long forum dedicated to this issue. While reflecting on the mission of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in the world today, the forum would seek to listen to our young people to learn from them. Fr. John Rizkilla (C), Fr. Daniel (A) and Fr. Kess (E) will work with Sayidna Mor Cyril to organize this event.

In a related area, the new website of the Standing Conference was unveiled by Fr. Daniel, Secretary of the Standing Conference (www.scooch.org). Long desired by the hierarchs, the website went online just the previous night. Fr. Daniel expressed his gratitude to Jeremy Gayed, a Coptic Orthodox young man with expertise in the area of web design, for launching and maintaining the website. As it develops, our hope is that the website will serve not only Oriental Orthodox faithful, especially youth, but also become a resource for those who wish to learn more about the ancient Christian witness of our Oriental Orthodox Churches. The Conference members recommended that links be created to facilitate interaction of our youth. They also asked that links be established to the official websites of the local churches, specifically to assist in locating Oriental Orthodox parishes in the United States.

Letter on the Youth

November 1, 2009

Reverend Fathers,

As you know, for many years the Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, Syrian and Syrian Malankara Orthodox Churches have enjoyed fruitful collaboration and fellowship under the auspices of the Standing Conference ofOriental Orthodox Churches. The mission of the Standing Conference is to proclaim and witness to the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as a fellowship of apostolic churches affirming the unity of the Orthodox Christian faith, demonstrating their solidarity as Oriental Orthodox; sharing and learning from the particular experiences of the member churches; and strengthening the spiritual and moral lives of their own communities.
