On November 19, 2025, the Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches (SCOOCh) issued a statement condemning and calling for the cessation of violence against Orthodox Christians in the nation of Ethiopia. Regrettably, the persecution of the Orthodox faithful has not abated since that time, and by some accounts has even increased in its intensity. The Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches once again calls for an immediate halt to the murder, torture, and persecution of the Orthodox faithful of Ethiopia of all ethnic backgrounds and in all regions of the country. As stated in our previous missive, the Standing Conference stands with Our Beloved Father His Holiness Abune Mathias I, Patriarch and Catholicos of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, with the Holy Synod of Ethiopia, and with all who are calling for peace and an end to this monstrous barbarity. In that spirit, the Standing Conference offers this statement authored by His Eminence Archbishop Petros, Archbishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Archdiocese of New York & Its Surroundings and Head of the SCOOCh Subcommittee on Emergency & Disaster Response. May God bless and save His faithful people. Lord, have mercy.
